Big Brother coverage. P1, 4, 5Virgin Media to double broadband speed. P13
And finally …
Days after a male contestant snuck through the selection process for ITV dating show Take Me Out despite having been a male escort and the broadcaster is in hot water again – for his date having a past as a, yes, female escort. Earlier this week it emerged that despite his questionable background 32-year-old Aaron Withers made it onto the show, hosted by Paddy McGuinness, and selected a girl called Wen to be his date. In a classic twist Wen has now given a tabloid interview telling her tale, as you do, in which she reveals that she too once signed up with an escort agency to offer certain services. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander and all that. Daily Mirror, P5

… The London Merchant,” a tragedy from 1731 that was one of the first British dramas to focus on the middle and working classes – and that has apparently never received a professional production in North America – will be performed Jan. 6-28 at the Theater at the Church of Notre Dame in Morningside Heights in Upper Manhattan. Written by George Lillo, “The London Merchant” is about the downfall of a young apprentice who is led astray by a prostitute. It was highly popular in the 18th century. The Storm Theater Company and Blackfriars Repertory Theater will jointly produce the work, directed by Peter Dobbins, Storm’s artistic director. A spokesman for the production, Pete Sanders, said on Monday that the producers had done research on the history of the play and could not find evidence that it had been performed professionally in the United States or Canada.

That day, executives at News Corp. announced they were closing down News of the World, the 168-year-old paper. They were doing so in an attempt to appease a growing public outcry about reporting tactics at Murdoch’s London papers, including allegations of widespread illegal phone hacking and bribing of police.
…
In the days that followed, under political pressure, News Corp. withdrew its $12 billion bid for full control of British Sky Broadcasting. More than a dozen News Corp. reporters and editors in London were arrested. Several top executives resigned.

Dickens is a cardinal representative of the age in which he lived. His writings shape our perception of Victorian London; even his detractor Walter Bagehot conceded that in his evocation of London life he was “like a special correspondent for posterity”. And his characters – from Scrooge and the Artful Dodger to Mr Micawber and Uriah Heep – have become avatars of Englishness.
…
Tomalin suggests that Dickens “left a trail like a meteor”. Those who engage with his legacy encounter many different versions of him: the radical, the republican, the mesmerist, the sentimentalist, the protector of orphans, the lover of circuses, the despairing father. But above all, in her view, “he set nineteenth-century London before our eyes and … noticed and celebrated the small people living on the margins of society”.

After a five year review from the time the law was enacted, sex workers are safer and have more rights. The Association of Chief Police Officers is suggesting a New Zealand-style decriminalisation in the UK.
There are an estimated 35,000 sex workers in London according to research by The London Daily News.

It also saw deplorable examples of snobbery, sexism, racism and animal cruelty — not to mention child labour and forced labour. The sponsors, horror of horrors, even included a brand of cigarettes.
…
There was no ‘legacy’, let alone a grandiose new sporting theme park like the £9.3 billion complex going up in London’s East End. But that was not the point. ‘There was this tremendous emotional legacy,’ says Janie Hampton. ‘People had come together for the first time since the war and were just thrilled to be competing peacefully.’
It is a point worth remembering as that ten-figure bill for London 2012 prepares to acquire another nought.
London Olympics, 1908 and 1948 (published by Shire) and The Austerity Olympics (Aurum) are both by Janie Hampton.

The Reckoning (1992), his inquiry into the murder of playwright Christopher Marlowe, scrutinised Elizabethan assize records with forensic exactitude; his last book, The Lodger (2007), explored a murky period of Shakespeare’s life in Jacobean London.
…
Another bravura performance, “A Naughty House”, amplifies on Shakespeare’s life in London as Nicholl described it in The Lodger. The French Huguenot family with whom Shakespeare lodged in the Cripplegate area from 1603 to 1605 may have had a sideline in the sex trade. That was not so odd, says Nicholl. London at that time was a “rackety boom town” of cut-throat literary ambitions, prostitutes and other moral dangers, where the theatre was never far from the brothel.
