London Massage Parlors: Croydon Advertiser goes free

The Croydon Advertiser is to go free from this week. Sales of the south London weekly, priced at 60p, have fallen below 15,000 (compared to 21,500 five years ago).

According to its Wikipedia entry, the Advertiser’s alumni include David Randall, an executive on the Independent on Sunday and author of the excellent book The Universal Journalist, and Malcolm Starbrook, now the energetic editor of the East London Advertiser.
PS: I wrote recently about the Advertiser carrying an advert for a massage parlour that the paper then exposed as a brothel. According to the online news outlet, Inside Croydon, it has repeatedly published the ad in spite of a Northcliffe executive telling me it was an accident and that it would be pulled. London, Sept 6 (PTI) A British MP was left red faced after his wife of seven years was exposed as a prostitute, charging 70 pounds an hour.
Carla Weatherley, 39, wife of Tory MP Mike Weatherley, who came to power with Prime Minister David Cameron earlier this year, was caught on camera performing a sexy striptease for an undercover reporter.
Carla, who allegedly worked as a prostitute in her native Brazil before marrying Weatherley, was also running three different ”massage parlours”, under the names Bea, Adriana and Bianca, The Daily Mail reported.
“I like it here, nice clients, nice people, nice place and good money,” she said.
The shocking revelation is bound to prove an embarrassment to Cameron also, who is pictured smiling at Weatherley’’s side on the MP’’s personal website.

Both Baker and Janutiene had previously worked as prostitutes, as had the fourth person in the dock, 48- year-old Sharon Kerrigan from London, described by Judge John Plumstead as an ‘old prostitute’.
On the morning of the raid, police found her there working as a brothel maid.
Baker, Janutiene and Kerrigan all appeared for sentencing having admitted a charge of keeping a brothel for prostitution.
Andrew appeared for sentence having been found guilty by a jury of the same charge.
Neil King, prosecuting, described the set up police found as “a well run, professional and tidy brothel”. At the house at the time were two “professional ladies” wearing silk dressing gowns and Kerrigan who was working as a brothel maid.
A police investigation discovered Baker had placed advertisements in local papers advertising a massage parlour.

London, Sept 6 (ANI): A Tory MP has come into the spotlight after his Brazilian wife, who he was married to for seven years, was exposed as a 70 pounds-an-hour prostitute.
Mike Weatherley, 53, who came to power with Prime Minister David Cameron earlier this year, wept when he was confronted, and said that he was shocked to find out that his wife Carla, 39, was a prostitute.
According to the Sunday Mirror, Carla, who is alleged to have worked as a prostitute in her native Brazil before marrying Weatherley, had been working in three different “massage parlours”, under the names Bea, Adriana and Bianca.
“I like it here, nice clients, nice people, nice place and good money,” the Daily Mail quoted her as telling the Sunday Mirror.
Weatherley is understood to have met her in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on a work trip, and they married in Brighton in 2003.

Would you believe it? This week’s Croydon Advertiser is again carrying the advert for the massage parlour it called a “sinister brothel” last week.
Let me remind you of the statement issued by Alan Geere, the editorial director of Northcliffe Media’s south-east weeklies:
We are aware of the sensitivities surrounding adult and personal services advertising. Conscious of these concerns, we take every reasonable step to ensure that the advertising we carry complies with both the letter and the spirit of the law… [my emphasis]…we co-operate pro-actively with the police in the event that we have cause for concern. What we choose not to do is to deny legitimate members of the community who choose to provide these services within the law, the right to advertise.

And the paper’s exposure did not come as a shock because, according to the Met spokeswoman, in December 2008 the police carried out – wait for it – “a proactive intelligence-based operation at an address in London Road” in which a man and a woman were arrested on suspicion of managing a brothel. They were later charged and received adult cautions.

London Massage Parlors: 5300 women sell sex in London’s ‘off-street’ trade

More than 5,000 women are selling sex from brothels, massage parlours and other premises in London.
A study by the Association of Chief Police Officers found 5,299, virtually all from overseas, are off-street prostitutes in the capital.
The national total is 17,344. Of these, 2,600 are victims of trafficking, the report warns. They are controlled mainly through debts or the threat of violence against their family.

East European women accounted for almost 60 per cent of off-street prostitutes in London, with more than 20 per cent from Asia. There were 741 South American and 265 British women.

London Massage Parlors: Reporter ‘exposes’ brothel that was advertised in his own newspaper

UPDATED 2pm: The Croydon Advertiser’s front page last week splashed on the results of “an undercover investigation” that revealed the existence of “a seedy brothel.”
The article, Sinister brothel uncovered next to charity office, was written in the style of a News of the World investigation, with the obligatory use of a hidden camera.
It even had the intrepid reporter, having risked his life to expose a brothel masquerading as a massage parlour, using the time-worn phrase about making his excuses and leaving prior to any sexual activity.
Evidently, the Advertiser journalist was prompted to track down this den of iniquity after a complaint from an unnamed businessman.
But he could have found evidence much closer to home because page 52 of his own newspaper carried an advert for the very same “fantasy massage” establishment he went to such trouble to “reveal”.

Ilir Habili’s ‘massage parlour‘ was closed using new laws which came into force on April 1, that allow police to shut premises they suspect being used for prostitution.
