Mayor calls on shoppers to fight prostitution

Shoppers must challenge newsagents who allow their windows to become advertising boards for prostitutes, the Mayor of London has said.

Speaking at at an event to mark International Women’s Day at the Glaziers Hall at London Bridge, Mr Johnson called on Londoners to make a difference.

“People do not understand the deep and intimate connection between a little card in a newsagent’s front window and organised crime in London, the real abuse and violence that is directed against women who fall victim to trafficking and prostitution.

In his strategy for tackling violence against women, also published on Monday, Mr Johnson said he wants more work to be done to reduce the demand for prostitutes. He said this should be done through better use of existing laws and licensing regulations, publicity campaigns and even education for school pupils.
