The cases featured on BBC’s Crimewatch programme on Monday (March 29, 2010) with detectives from Britain and Holland appealing for help to get information about the deaths of Paula Fields, 31, in London and 33-year-old photographer Melissa Halstead in Holland.
Both had been girlfriends of John Sweeney, 54, originally from Skelmersdale, before he was jailed for the attempted murder of Delia Balmer, his then partner. It is believed Sweeney could be up for parole next year.
The dismembered body of Paula Fields, from Halewood, was found in London’s Regent’s Canal, in several holdalls on February 19, 2001. Her body was dismembered and the head, hands and feet were missing. She had moved to London in about 1998 and lived in Highbury Grove, in a hostal/bedsit. She had worked as a prostitute.
