The City of London has a stunning mix of architectural styles and an alluring sense of dynamism, says the author Barbara Stcherbatcheff.

Coq D’Argent (020 7395 5000; www.coqdargent.com), at No1 Poultry, for the gardens, views and service, but it’s expensive. For cheaper options, head to Leadenhall Market. On Fridays, I used to wander from my office near Monument across London Bridge to Borough Market, grab a hot turkey sandwich with cranberry sauce, and could almost forget about finance for at least an hour.

To 40/30 (020 7071 5009; www.searcys.co.uk), the restaurant/bar on the top of The Gherkin, which offers spectacular views from one of London’s most iconic buildings.

Taxis are typically easier to find in the City than other parts of London, with the exception of evening rush hour when you may find it impossible.
